What level of education is required to be a periodontist?

In addition to earning an undergraduate degree, the aspiring periodontist must obtain a dental doctorate, which requires 3+ years of extensive in-classroom and hands-on training. Then, they need to complete specialty training in periodontics. Dr. Lightfoot, for instance, earned his post-doctoral degree in periodontics at Ohio State University as well as a Master of Science Degree in oral biology. He has also prioritized continuing education and advanced training throughout his career, which led to him becoming board-certified by the American Board of Periodontology!

I struggle with dental anxiety. What should I do?

All too often, patients keep their questions, concerns, and fears to themselves. However, we want to hear all about them! Over the phone, we can assess the urgency of the situation and schedule an appointment accordingly. They will also share what to do until you arrive, like rinsing your mouth periodically with warm saltwater or taking OTC pain medication as directed.

Dr. William Scott Lightfoot

Dr. Lightfoot is the founder of Lightfoot Center for Laser Periodontics and a board-certified periodontist with decades of experience serving Norwood and beyond. He earned a Post-Doctoral Degree in Periodontics from The Ohio State University, along with degrees in Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, and Oral Biology. During his residency, he even served as Chief Resident, a role for those who show exceptional leadership and clinical excellence.

Dr. Lightfoot has previously served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and is a licensed LANAP surgeon and nationally recognized educator. Today, he continues to lecture on periodontal care and dental implants.

She completed dental school in Athens, Greece, before pursuing specialty training in periodontics and periodontal prostheses at the University of Pennsylvania. She then earned her DMD through Boston University's Advanced Standing Program.
