Frequently Asked Questions
If left untreated, can periodontal disease affect my overall health?
Yes, in fact, according to the American Academy of Periodontology, the inflammation caused by periodontal disease can affect many other areas of the body, increasing complications associated with a variety of medical conditions including diabetes, brain abscesses, and even Alzheimer’s disease.
What are the benefits of having a periodontist place my dental implants?
Although there are many qualified dental professionals who can place dental implants, there are several key advantages for choosing a periodontist for this treatment, including:
-
Their specialized training focuses on the gums, bones, and dental implants.
-
They often can provide a more thorough evaluation of your medical and dental health prior to treatment.
-
They have expertise in treating both gum and bone tissue to ensure that you have a more natural looking smile and smoother treatment.
-
They can provide proper support in maintaining and managing your dental implants over time.
-
They proudly work with restorative and general dentists to improve patient outcomes.
What are periodontists qualified to do?
Your periodontist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease, as well as in a variety of highly specialized dental treatments.
Not only are periodontists qualified to place dental implants, but they are also trained to monitor them and ensure they remain strong and healthy for a lifetime.
Periodontists can treat and correct receding gums and can collaborate with general dentists to help ensure their patients receive comprehensive care long after their periodontal treatment has concluded.
What can I do at home to prevent periodontal disease?
The best way to prevent periodontal disease from developing is to maintain excellent oral hygiene at home, including brushing your teeth twice a day, and flossing daily.
You should also visit your dentist every six months for routine checkups and cleanings and visit your periodontist to treat advanced stages of gum disease if necessary.
Dr. William Scott Lightfoot
Raised in Ohio, it was only natural for Dr. Lightfoot to begin his studies at The Ohio State University. In addition to earning his Post-Doctoral Degree in Periodontics, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition and a Master of Science Degree in Oral Biology. If that wasn’t impressive enough, he is also board-certified by the American Board of Periodontology!
Now, Dr. Lightfoot uses everything he has learned throughout his career to ensure his patients have the calm, comfortable, and compassionate experience they deserve while maintaining, restoring, and enhancing their smiles. He was also an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and lectures nationally on periodontal care and dental implants.
Dr. Chrysi Boutari
Growing up, Dr. Boutari had a great dentist to look up to: her father! She saw both he and his team go to great lengths to make their patients feel comfortable and confident, which is something that continues to inspire her all of these years later.
The first step on Dr. Boutari’s journey to becoming one of our dedicated periodontists in Braintree was attending dental school in Athens, Greece. Then, she completed specialty training in periodontics and periodontal prostheses at the University of Pennsylvania and attended the Advanced Standing DMD Program through Boston University. Even with these impressive accomplishments under her belt, she continues to pursue advanced training with the American Dental Association and the Massachusetts Dental Society to ensure she can continue to provide her patients with the absolute best care.
LANAP
LANAP, or Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is a minimally invasive laser treatment for periodontal disease that offers several advantages, including minimal post-operative discomfort and a faster recovery than traditional gum surgeries. The laser targets diseased tissue and harmful bacteria, effectively removing them before moving to the root surfaces to eliminate tartar. This allows your dentist in Braintree to preserve the healthy portions of your gums, ensuring natural healing and bone regeneration.
Patients who undergo LANAP treatment do not experience discomfort and recover more quickly, making it a worthwhile solution for a wide range of patients. Because the laser moves precisely, there is less risk of complications or infection.
Dental Implants
If you are struggling with tooth loss, you don’t have to accept low self-esteem and a limited diet as your new normal. With our expertise, confidence, and technology, we can rebuild incomplete smiles with dental implants that look and feel natural. Not only do these prosthetics rebuild and restore oral function, but they also enhance your aesthetics, so all you see is a complete, beautiful smile.
Our specialists are expertly trained in implantology, ensuring long-lasting success by carefully planning the placement of each dental implant in the jawbone. Whether it is a single tooth requiring replacement or a more complex case involving a full-arch restoration, we can deliver life-changing results.
